John claims for himself the quality of witness concerning Christ. In reality, however, he is only a distinguished witness of the Christian life, or of the life of Christ in the Church at the close of the first century.
Doesn't it just stick in your craw how the Modernists seek to demean the very man handpicked by Christ? Outside of our Lady, there is probably no closer friend of Jesus, no one who knew Him better than His beloved disciple. Theologians believe our Lord loved Him so much, so grateful for His unyielding faith and presence at Calvary when all other disciples had cowered and scattered, that He spared John martyrdom. In fact, none of those who stood with Christ to the end on Golgatha, suffered martyrdom. Not that they weren't willing, but in His mercy He spared them. St. John was the last living apostle. Why wouldn't he be the consummate witness? That's a question the Modernists avoid like the plague.
