The narrations of John are not properly history, but a mystical contemplation of the Gospel. The discourses contained in his Gospel are theological meditations, lacking historical truth concerning the mystery of salvation.
How best to dismiss the Word of God by negating its divine source. By claiming that the Beloved Disciple St. John lacks historical truth regarding the mystery of salvation they can lessen the impact of St. John's magnificent Gospel. By doing that they can sow doubts about not only Christ's divinity, but His very existence. This is a favorite of Modernists and New Agers who have their own prophets and cringe when one reminds them that there is only one God, one Man-God and He was the Son of God Jesus Christ, Lord and Redeemer. This goes against the scientific mind which cannot decipher supernatural revelations which the Holy Ghost worked through St. John both in his Gospel, his epistles and the final word, the Apocalypse of St. John which the Protestants have eliminated reference to the last Apostle by merely calling the work "Revelation", all part of the revisionism that seeks to cast doubt and superstition on the Gospels for if one casts doubts, then the others could be wrong as well. That is the thinking of these insidious insurgents who are, as St. John called them in 1 St. John 2: 18 and 22, "antichrists."
