Reflections on Sacred Scripture

by Cyndi Cain

Have we forgotten how to tell time?

"And then they will see the Son of Man coming upon clouds with great power and majesty...But of that day or hour no one knows, neither the angels in Heaven nor the Son, but the Father only."

Matthew 13: 26, 32

This Sunday, November 16, offers the Gospel passage from Mark 13:24-32 regarding the signs, as told to the disciples by Our Lord Jesus Christ, regarding the Second Coming of Christ.

Many, far, far too many of us in these days, particularly many who have followed Medjugorje and other reported messages from visionaries and locutionists, have assumed that when Our Blessed Mother or Our Lord have spoken in these messages of warnings, chastisements, and the Triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary that the signs spoken of in this Gospel are imminent for our own generations. I have a feeling that in the time of the apostles, the people thought the same thing too.

The truth is revealed, but our understanding remains clouded, for we are not open to the Holy Spirit, and, in fact, often demand in our prayers, that we be given knowledge that is not our to have, for God alone knows what is best for each one of us.

Taking collectively the plethora of messages disseminated by various locutionists and seers regarding the times in which we live, there are two things that God has made me aware of that He wishes me to share with you, regarding the understanding of these messages.

First, these Heavenly messages speak of two different time periods. The first time period is the one in which we live, and the near future, within our lifetime, or the lifetime of our children. The signs of this time period are far different from those spoken of in todayís Gospel.

Secondly, as our Heavenly Mother Mary often does speak of the End of All Time, rather then these End Times which will usher in the Triumph of her Immaculate Heart. We confuse the two, and start looking for the sun to darken, the moon to not shed its light, and for stars to fall out of the sky, etc. In fact, the signs we need to look for are present to us every day, and our Blessed Mother wants us to pray very much from our hearts, so we donít get confused.

What does the Triumph of Maryís Immaculate Heart consist of? I donít know. I feel strongly that it is an on-going process, that it is already in progress, and will culminate in a time when we, Godís Children, will realize His True presence in the Eucharist in a way we cannot do now, nor even imagine, a time when there will be His Peace on earth, not manís definition of peace.

There are signs and wonders for the End Times, this is certainly true. They are varied, and are both Heavenly, that is signs and wonders in the skies, plus the plethora of all the varied disasters occurring throughout the world in our own country and all over the globe. Also, keep in mind that if your heart is open to God, then you will see what you need to see, know what you need to know when you need to know it, and to search for anything more, to seek knowledge out of curiosity rather than the love of God, is dangerous for each one of us.

Too many of us have applied our own fallible logic to many messages, weíve jumped to conclusions, weíve not prayed from our heart, and therefore, we feel let down because certain things have not yet come to pass. Keep in mind that when a Heavenly message is given it is done so in Godís Infinite Plan, which is without time, and we are forever trying to pinpoint God down to a specific time. When we do this, we box God in, deny the truth, close our hearts, and make ourselves ripe for disappointment, even setting ourselves up to criticize and judge certain messages and the messenger chosen to give that message.

That we are in the End Times is what our Blessed Mother is telling us. She urges us to wait, watch, and pray. To do what she asks, is to live the Gospel. Jesus, in todayís Gospel, told all of us what we can look for when He is to come again, The Second Coming.

His instructions at the end of this Gospel passage should be hope and encouragement for all of us. "As to the exact day or hour, no one knows it, neither the angels in Heaven nor even the Son, but only the Father."

     Amen! So be it!
