88. TOP 100 CATHOLIC OF THE CENTURY:
Dr. Tom Dooley
Healer of hearts, souls and bodies in Southeast Asia

The voters chose as the 88th TOP CATHOLIC OF THE CENTURY: the giving physician Dr. Tom Dooley, a young ex-Navy doctor who, rather than returning to the states to reap the spoils of private practice, chose to answer God's call to minister to the poorest of the poor in Southeast Asia before his life was sadly cut short by cancer. His apostolate to the downtrodden is believed to have been the inspiration for the Peace Corps. For more on the 88th selection, click on DR. TOM DOOLEY

Catholic PewPoint helps put things in perspective and clear up the tunnels of confusion!

This summer we present all the editorials to date from 1999 for you to review. Take a ride on the twists and turns of humanity in past installments of Catholic PewPoint. In this wild ride of life, through the tunnels of doubt we need to cling to the rails of hope and trust that God will guide us safely over the whirls and swirls, dips and blips, highs and lows that affect us daily in this rollercoaster called life. These commentaries help keep things on a more even keel, slowing the turns so that all can better navigate the dangerous curves and stay on track in heading towards the light at the end of the tunnel. During the summer we will present this archive feature on Tuesdays and a new commentary every Friday. SIMPLY SHEEN:The Mirage before the Millennium!

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but the words of Bishop Fulton J. Sheen have been known to launch a thousand images in one's mind, one of the ways this late luminary did so much to evangelize the faith. Because of the urgency of the times and because few there are today who possess the wisdom, simplicity and insight than the late Archbishop who touched millions, we are bringing you daily gems from his writings. The good bishop makes it so simple that we have dubbed this daily series: "SIMPLY SHEEN".

"The thirsty traveler in the desert who mistakes a mirage for an oasis is superstitious. He has abandoned reason and sees a dream for a reality. So our twentieth century, impatient with its long voyage on the sea of life, after having denied a port and thrown away the the compass, has turned clouds into islands and fog-banks into imaginary continents."

"If you wish Peace, then you must come to Me. Cut down and cast from you all manner of weapons. I speak not only of guns, swords and weaponry of war. I speak also to your human intellect, your ego and will. "

Those words from Our Lord were imparted to the Hidden Flower of the Immaculate Heart on First Friday on June 2 , 1995 in which Jesus entreats His children to guard all our senses lest we would wage war on virtues. He asks us to realize the lures of the world and false promises are merely a mirage and that peace can only be achieved through Him. His Blessed Mother prefaces her Divine Son's Message two days earlier on the Feast of the Visitation by reminding her little ones of her role as intercessor and asks us to call on her Divine Spouse the Holy Spirit to inspire us and imbue us with His Gifts. FEAST OF SAINT LAWRENCE, DEACON AND MARTYR

Wednesday, August 11, 1999

FEAST OF SAINT CLARE, VIRGIN AND RELIGIOUS FOUNDER

PRAYER & DEVOTIONS

In honor of the Feast of Saint Lawrence we present the Preface for the Mass in his honor:

Christ, Your Son, offering His life for our ransom, loved us until the end and thus taught us that there is no greater love than to lay down one's life for the brethren. In like manner, Lawrence, His true and faithful disciple, gave the supreme proof of his love by his martyrdom.

Events Today in Church History

On this date 528 years ago Cardinal Francesco della Rovere was elected as the 212th successor of Peter, becoming Pope Sixtus IV. He would go on to establish the Feast of Saint Joseph, construct the Sistine Chapel and be the first pontiff to celebrate Mass there, and found the Spanish Inquisition. It was Sixtus IV who appointed the controversial Dominican Tomas de Torquemada as the grand inquisitor.
