Events this weekend in Church History

Friday is the 272nd Anniversary of the canonization of Saint Stanislaus Kostka, a young Polish seminarian who died at the young age of seventeen and who had the mystical experience of an angel bringing him Holy Communion when he could not get to a church. The Blessed Mother also appeared to him throughout his young life and he was personally guided by Saint Peter Canisius. "The time of chastisement enters its very painful period; then shall Divine Justice come to purify all of creation."

The Blessed Virgin Mary reminds us that this is a time she and her Divine Son have been foretelling for quite some time, a time when we are nearing the Triumph of her Immaculate Heart which will usher in the Age of the Divine Will, the Reign of the Sacred Heart, the Era of the Eucharistic Presence, the Century of Peace, the New Pentecost. But the suffering intensifies as we near that period foretold in Sacred Scripture - the time of the purification as she tells all her children through her 277th and 278th messages to the Hidden Flower of the Immaculate Heart. LITURGY FOR THE WEEKEND

This weekend we celebrate the Feast of the great educator and religious founder who left an indelible mark in the United States - the persevering, selfless nun Saint Mother Frances Xavier Cabrini on Friday and on Saturday we observe the Blessed Virgin Mary on Saturday. Sunday is the Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time which supersedes the Feast of Saint Albert the Great, with Monday being the thirty-third Monday in Ordinary Time and the dual feasts of Saint Gertrude the Great and Saint Margaret of Scotland. For the liturgies, readings, meditations and vignettes on the above feasts for this weekend, click on LITURGY

PRAYER & DEVOTIONS

In honor of the Feast of that great American citizen who became a saint - Saint Mother Frances Xavier Cabrini we present the Opening Prayer from the Mass in her honor:

God our Father, You called Frances Xavier Cabrini from Italy to serve the immigrants of America. By her example teach us concern for the stranger, the sick and the frustrated. By her prayers help us to see Christ in all the men and women we meet.

HEADLINES:

Vietnam Communists nix Papal visit; Only Prayer will turn the tide

When push came to shove, the Communist leaders of Vietnam showed their true colors by initially nixing the possibility of a papal visit to Vietnam in 1999 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Apparitions of Our Lady of La Vang. Contradicting themselves after stating they knew nothing of the invite, they admitted they had received a letter from the Bishops Conference of Vietnam. The door was left slightly ajar that the Pope's visit may not be dead deal when the Communists used the word "yet" in their communique. Through the prayers of the eight million Catholics in Vietnam and millions of others around the world there is still a possibility the government will relent, but it will take a lot of petitions to Heaven to sway these atheistic lords. Nicaraguan Cardinal implores the world to forsake politics for the sake of relief

As the statistics of those dead or missing mount, the head of the Church in Nicaragua Cardinal Miguel Obando y Bravo, placed in charge by the government to distribute relief supplies to the victims, has appealed to the world to forego any political objectives and capitalization on others misfortunes by opening their hearts and coffers for the less fortunate who have suffered greatly over the past two weeks from the devastating effects of the floods wrought by Hurricane Mitch. Even though the Church has been placed in charge because of the trust factor, fears are that Catholics will get priority attention before all others but the Cardinal assured all that priorities will be given to those most in need, regardless of creed or political persuasion. Separation of Church and State group raise question of undue influence in School Vouchers debate

An alarming point was raised this week by an education group out of Fresno, calling themselves Separation of Church and State Alliance. They claim that the school voucher bill is written so that those private institutions agreeing to the vouchers will have to comply with government directives that could greatly water down the religious content of their curriculum at the behest of those holding the vouchers and which would allow the government to dictate courses. If this is indeed true, then Catholic administrators will study the school voucher bill further and seek to eliminate those loopholes before pushing for the same legislation in their states. Vatican observer tweaks UN General Assembly's conscience with the fact immigrants getting the raw deal in many countries

During the week we celebrate the saintly Mother Frances Xavier Cabrini who did so much for immigrants, Archbishop Renato Martino, permanent Vatican observer to the United Nations, once again spoke to the UN General Assembly, imploring them to preserve the dignity, rights and safety of immigrants in many countries where they are being abused and exploited. He decried the fact that while money for arms are always available - especially for ethnic cleansing, humanitarian resources are not readily available for refugees and immigrants. This imbalance of military and humanitarian aid sorely tips the scale at the detriment of human life, the Archbishop asserted. For more, click on Immigrants.

The real siege is that satan can seize too many souls!

In this weekend's editorial we tackle the serious threat of war that looms ever closer with the announcement of an all-alert to troops in the Gulf. Corresponding with the release of the terrorist political thriller "The Siege", it all adds up to the beginning of the climactic clash between the star of Islam and the Cross of Christendom as foretold in Divine and private revelation. The great fear is that, in an effort to preserve lives and material possessions and objectives, we lose track of the greatest treasure man has - his eternal soul. And souls are the lifeline to preserving peace which, because of satan's agenda, has been badly obliterated to the point where thousands, perhaps millions of people will die for the sake of two or three selfish, proud leaders - neither one of whom has the moral turpitude to guide a family, let alone a country. Once again we are caught up in the propaganda of "our country right or wrong." It can't be that philosophy, but rather "God's Will over our country's wrongs." Only by adhering to the Divine Will can we hope and pray that the Almighty will deliver us from evil. Understanding the "wound of love" known as Purgatory.

In her column this week, Sister Mary Lucy Astuto takes the reader on a special journey to Purgatory through the interior visions of a special mystic, chronicled by Sister Emmanuel of Medjugorje. In this first of a series on Purgatory by Sister Mary Lucy, she gives us a glimpse of what Purgatory is all about as Sister Emmanuel best describes it as a "wound of love." October 25th Medjugorje Monthly Message

Dear children! Today I call you to come closer to my Immaculate Heart. I call you to renew in your families the fervor of the first days when I called you to fasting, prayer and conversion. Little children, you accepted my messages with open hearts, although you did not know what prayer was. Today, I call you to open yourselves completely to me so that I may transform you and lead you to the heart of my Son Jesus, so that He can fill you with His love. Only in this way, little children, will you find true peace - the peace that only God gives you. Thank you for having responded to my call.
