Rumors abound on Pope's successor with appointment of popular Brazilian Cardinal to powerful position
With the resignation of the dean of the College of Cardinals - Cardinal Bernardin Gantin as head of the Congregation of Bishops because of mandatory retirement, the Holy Father announced his selection of Cardinal Lucas Moreira Neves from Sao Salvador de Bahia in Brazil as the new prefect in charge of bishops worldwide. House of Representatives trying to make abortion a harder pill to swallow
Standing strong on the side of the culture of life, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to ban funding for the abortion pill RU-486 which pro-aborts have been lobbying for. They again added an amendment to the UN funding bill that will outlaw any money being spent for population control. Both bills must now go through the Senate where the fight is expected to be bitter. Even with a Senate vote for, the likelihood of a presidential veto looms large. But Washington Republicans are adamant that Bill Clinton will not get his funding without the bans. Fiesta of 3,000 Padres to gather in Mexico City in July
For six days in July, three thousand priests from around the world will come together at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe with marquee names among cardinals and bishops to address the clerical assembly in preparation for the third millennium. Sponsored by the Vatican Council for the Clergy, American notables set to speak are Cardinal John O'Connor and the fast-rising in prominence Archbishop Charles Chaput, the Capuchin native Indian head of the Denver Archdiocese who is one of the leading advocates for the conservative cause. Vatican vents outrage at the United States and UN for sanctions that are greatly harming the innocent people of Iraq
While Bill Clinton woos the Chinese in hopes of bending over backward to award them favored-nation status despite their horrendous track record of human rights abuses and religious persecution, he insists on tightening the inhuman sanctions on the Iraqi people who are suffering because of the hate between Saddam Hussein and the American Government.
