Blessing of the Throats Day
Today is that traditional feast where the faithful receive a special blessing - the blessing of throats as the priests and deacons, with crossed candles bless the throats of all young and old. Today is also a triple-option day in the liturgy with the celebrant given the choice wearing red chasuble and stole to commemorate the martyrdom of Saint Blase, the joyful feast of the Apostle of the North Saint Ansgar with white vestments, or celebrate the Mass of Ordinary Time in green. "My healing - I think it's a witness to the power of the Rosary"
Those were Mother Angelica's words regarding her miraculous healing which we continue to discuss in today's commentary. Yesterday we spoke of the "how" and today we deal with the "why" it happened to this special victim-soul nun who had born the crippling pain willingly for four decades. Without usurping God's reasons, we venture to share with the reader ideas on why Mother has been miraculous cured NOW. For today's commentary entitled, "Mother Angelica's miraculous healing is part of God's master plan and we're all a part of it!" click on TODAY'S CATHOLIC PewPOINT
The Beginning of the Age of Innocent
Today in our megaseries feature on Church history, we begin a multi-part series on Pope Innocent III, one of the youngest pontiffs in Church annals and a pivotal Pope in the course of Holy Mother Church whose leadership brought the Holy See back into prominence, but more importantly opened the door for two great saints of the Church and their religious orders which thrive today because of Innocent's guidance and authorization. For today's fifty-fifth installment titled, " Pope Innocent III:State of the Church at the end of the Twelfth Century," click on THE HISTORY OF THE MASS AND HOLY MOTHER CHURCH
Mercy begets Mercy if we practice the Corporal Works of Mercy
Three years ago yesterday the Mother of God imparted to the Hidden Flower of the Immaculate Heart a special message on giving of ourselves unselfishly for the more we give the greater rewards we gain through living the corporal works of Mercy as Jesus said, "If you did it for the least of these little ones, you did it for Me." Our Lady shows us the formula for doing this in the seventy first lesson/meditation "Be satisfied with very little that Mercy may increase." Click on THE HIDDEN WAY
Measuring Maturity is a matter of faith
In his column based on "Faith: Key to the Heart of God," Father John Hampsch, C.M.F. talks today about "Measuring Maturity" when it comes to our faith - on both a secondary and primary level it does no good to worry for faith is foreign to worrying. Click on KEYS TO LIVING GOD'S WILL
PRAYERS & DEVOTION
Today's prayer is taken from the Collect for today's Mass of St. Blase and the Opening Prayer of the Mass for St. Ansgar
Lord, hear the prayers of Your martyr Blase. Give us the joy of Your Peace in this life and help us to gain the happiness that will never end.
Father, You sent St. Ansgar to bring the light of Christ to many nations. May his prayers help us to walk in the light of Your Truth.
Medjugorje Monthly Message for January 25th
Dear children! Today again I call all of you to prayer. Only with prayer, dear children, will your heart change, become better, and be more sensitive to the Word of God. Little children, do not permit satan to pull you apart and to do with you what he wants. I call you to be responsible and determined and to consecrate each day to God in prayer. May Holy Mass, little children, not be a habit for you, but life. By living Holy Mass each day, you will feel the need for holiness and you will grow in holiness. I am close to you and intercede before God for each of you, so that He may give you strength to change your heart. Thank you for having responded to my call! HEADLINES:
Despite pleas for clemency by the Holy Father, Texas woman due to be executed today
Texas axe-murderer Karla Faye Tucker most likely will not see tomorrow, despite the fact the Pope has written personally to Texas Governor George W. Bush through the Apostolic Nuncio of the United States asking for leniency for the woman who has spent fourteen years on death row. The Holy Father reminded Governor Bush that clemency would "create a culture more favorable to respect for life." Click on Death row to read more.
Look who's coming to dinner!
How would you feel if after Mass Sunday morning you returned home to find you had a special visitor - not just any special visitor - but the Pope himself! That's what happened to Giuseppe and Annunziata Manago and their family this past Sunday as the Roman family expressed their delight and surprise that one so great would visit their humble abode. It was part of the Holy Father's pastoral visits - one which sets the trend for 13,000 visits by lay apostles in the same manner as the Pope did Sunday, his first such visit to a private Roman home ever. Holy Father lauds martyred priest
As we reported in these pages yesterday, the Holy Father acknowledged publicly on Sunday at the Vatican when he lamented the death of Bosnian Franciscan priest Fra Vijeko Curic and sung his praises and those like him who have willingly given their lives for Christ. We also include a personal piece from a fellow priest of his province that provides more insight. Click on martyred priest to read more.
PROVERB OF THE DAY
"When you sit down to dine with a ruler, keep in mind who is before you; and put a knife to your throat if you have a ravenous appetite."
