"Upon this Rock I will build My Church"
We complete our first summer retro marathon week of our on-going megaseries on Church History with the sixth installment of the early chapters to catch readers up-to-date. Yesterday we featured the Apostle Saint Paul and today we feature his counterpart - the Apostle chosen by Christ as His first Vicar on earth - Saint Peter. We document the early years as one sees the Church begin to grow and take form. For the sixth installment, titled "Thou art Peter and upon this Rock I will build My Church", click on THE HISTORY OF THE MASS AND HOLY MOTHER CHURCH.

Media mood more mellow after Vatican Conference
American media open to Vatican proposals     Today's editorial deals with a special Religion and Media conference held last week specifically for the American media as guests of the Vatican. Here were the tough, cynical media moguls, editors and reporters from major dailies, networks, etc. confessing their faults and resolving to give all a fairer shake in reporting on religion. The Holy Spirit was truly present and we can only hope this new esprit de corps continues into the new millennium. For our commentary, The mouse that roared was actually a gentle dove!, click on Tuesday's CATHOLIC PewPOINT

Keep a close guard on the tongue
THE HIDDEN WAY      The 92nd Lesson/Meditation imparted by Jesus to the Hidden Flower of the Immaculate Heart, which is one in a series of 100 Meditative Lessons imparted to her and this one deals with the Second Commandment and Our Lord's wise counsel to guard our tongues closely and not curse or take the Lord's name in vain. By doing that, we protect our hearts and most importantly, our souls. Click on THE HIDDEN WAY

Lutheran pact pleases Pope while prospects of Pope and Patriarch meeting dim
Pope lauds Lutheran pact     Not since before Martin Luther plastered his confessions on the door at Augsburg have Roman Catholics and Lutherans been this close to justification and this greatly pleases the Holy Father, but there is sadness that his hoped-for meeting with the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church has hit so many snags that it now seems implausible they will ever meet as the Moscow head continues to sandbag the Vicar of Christ. Portuguese Catholics stage a voter boycott to defeat Abortion iniative
Portugal provides promise that abortion won't take hold     The Mother of God promised at Fatima that her beloved Portugal would be preserved if they keep the faith and the Portuguese are not letting Our Lady down, evidence of the fact that enough Catholics stayed home to completely nullify an abortion referendum that would have eased abortion restrictions. Parliamentary procedures demand a large turnout to make any initiative legal and the Catholics of praying and staying home proved provided the Divine intervention that keeps abortion a crime in Portugal. Violence breaks out in East Timor a week after Bishop met with Indonesian president
Indonesia playing hardball with East Timor     Less than a week after Bishop Carlos Belo of Dili, former Nobel Prize winner, was personally assured by Indonesia's President B.J. Habibie that special concessions and courtesies would be granted the Catholic country of East Timor, violence broke out when Indonesian troops opened fire on a group of student protesters who are demanding independence from this Muslim country which annexed their country illegally. Swiss Guard installation toned down after eight week delay 37 new Swiss Guards installed in elite corps     What had intended to be a grand and glorious celebration of Swiss Guard installations and the elevation of the new commandant back in early May went off nearly two months later in the relative seclusion of only immediate family and friends because of the shocking murder of the Holy Father's personal pick commandant-elect Alois Estermann.
