Disputed date of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi. Most consider October 3, 1226 is actual death of Francis, but some historians have said that since it was the evening, it was actually after midnight that he died in Assisi. This has validity since Pope Gregory IX established his feast on October 4th in 1228 when he canonized the founder of the Franciscan Order of mendicant friars. Pope John Paul II beatifies Blessed Aloysius Luigi Scrosoppi on this date, a Franciscan friar.

Pope John Paul II elevates Blessed Antoine Chevrier to beatification status followed the next year by beatification ceremonies for Blessed Marcel Callo, Pierino Morosoni, and Antonia Mesina.
