Move over Saint Anthony, Saint Luke shares Padua with you now!
On the Feast of Saint Luke, Padua, Italy is no longer known only for their beloved son Saint Anthony of Padua for it has been confirmed that since 1562 the bones of St. Luke have rested in St. Justina's Basilica in Padua. In fact, recent studies claim the Evangelist was most probably in his 80's when he died and he succumbed to the same kind of illnesses so prevalent in our society today - emphysema and osteoporosis. Greek Orthodox Church out to put kibosh on Pope's Jubilee Journey to trace the footsteps of the Apostle Paul
More and more it looks like the Holy Father's hopes of completing his much-anticipated historic "Jubilee Journey" in the latter part of the Jubilee Year 2000 to Athens, Greece and other parts of the country where the Apostle Saint Paul journeyed. The obstacle rests squarely with the Greek Orthodox Church which is adamant in not recognizing the Supreme Pontiff of Rome, going so far as to do so only if he renounces all Jesus bequeathed on Saint Peter which, of course, the Holy Father will never do. Ergo, the stalemate. For more, click on Beware of Greeks not bearing gifts.
Australian peacekeepers seek answers to senseless massacres in Catholic churches in East Timor
Australian peacekeepers began the gruesome task of uncovering answers to the senseless massacres of Catholics in East Timor when they entered the gutted churches of Ave Maria and Our Lady of Fatima where hundreds were mowed down by pro-Indonesian militia out to totally exterminate Catholics during the period immediately following East Timor's unanimous vote for independence. While peacekeepers have totally secured the capitol city of Dili, areas in the outskirts of the island remain tense with militia youth hiding as snipers. For more, click on East Timor .
Israel seeks damage control by responding quickly to Vatican concerns
Israel's Minister of Interior Security Shlom Ben-Ami was quick to reply to the Holy See regarding the Vatican's grave concerns of safety in Nazareth with the construction of a Muslim mosque immediately next to the Basilica of the Annunciation where the Archangel Gabriel appeared to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Vatican is worried that recent gains by Islam fundamentalists which are crowding out Christian rights in the Holy Land will deter the Pope's visit, but Israel responded that they will assure his safety and that of all pilgrims during the Jubilee Year even though the situation remains volatile with Muslim interests. Why Andrew Greeley's ideas are alien to so many Catholics who realize modernists like him are "out there." |
In his column today, Pat Ludwa examines the abuses of the Novus Ordo Mass and exposes the flimsy arguments of Andrew Greeley who is at it again in trying to throw up smokescreens on why the reforms and the importance he placed on the concept of the Mass being a meal have not worked. Rather than saying, "mea culpa" Greeley is quick to blame everyone else from the Pope to the Bishops to the priests. Pat points out that, in some instances, he is right that some bishops have been too lax in allowing abuses, but he also reveals the underbelly of Greeley's campaign and the aberrations of the Mass that Greeley fought so hard for and which, in effect, are definitely not working. The DAILY WORD
"The harvest indeed is great, but the laborers are few. Pray therefore the Lord of the harvest to send forth laborers into His harvest. Go. Behold, I send you forth as lambs in the midst of wolves. Carry neither purse, nor wallet, nor sandals, and greet no one on the way. Whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace to this house!' And if a son of peace be there, your peace will rest upon him; but if not, it will return to you. And remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they have; for the laborer deserves his wages. Do not go from house to house. And whatever town you enter, and they receive you, eat what is set before you, and cure the sick who are there, and say to them, 'The kingdom of God is at hand for you.'" |

Holy Father traces God's Love from Old Testament to the New Covenant in leading us all back to the Father through love from and for God
In his most recent regular weekly Wednesday Papal Audience in St. Peter's Square, Pope John Paul II spoke about the ultimate love God has for man through His creation and imparting the commandments to show man how to live in grace. The Holy Father traces this love from the Old Testament to the fulfillment of Love in the New Testament when He sent His only-begotten Son - the ultimate sign of Love - and Jesus exhibited His ultimate sign of Love by dying for us after teaching us of His Love. The Vicar of Christ completes his catechesis "The Theological Virtue of Love: Love for God" by showing how the Holy Spirit reinforces and perpetuates that Love from God and in us. For the Pope's words on his talk, "Who loves has known God, because God is Love," click on THE VICAR OF CHRIST SPEAKS.

Hell is full of fools!
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but the words of Bishop Fulton J. Sheen have been known to launch a thousand images in one's mind, one of the ways this late luminary did so much to evangelize the faith. Because of the urgency of the times and because few there are today who possess the wisdom, simplicity and insight than the late Archbishop who touched millions, we are bringing you daily gems from his writings. The good bishop makes it so simple that we have dubbed this daily series: "SIMPLY SHEEN".
"Dante in his description of hell said that when he first entered it, he found some spirits that were neither rebellious nor faithful, but existed solely for themselves. They were 'hateful, distasteful to God and to His enemies.' When these indifferent souls steal, they do not restore; when they have moral collapse, disgusting to the moral sense, they do not repent, but creep back into an old respectability; they judge themselves by the accepted standards of the group in which they move; social refinement is regarded as the flower and the aroma of virtue; secular conventions are given the force of Divine commands; and finally, they may call themselves stupid but never sinful."
Today is the Feast of the Evangelist Saint Luke while tomorrow we commemorate another martyred feast - that of the North American Martyrs including the Jesuit Missionaries Saint Isaac Jogues and Saint John de Brefeuf at the hands of the Mohawks.
