The Pope and the President
The inspiring impact of two moral giants of our times
In this weekend's editorial, we take a short trip down memory lane to ten years ago when the iron curtain came tumbling down. The architects were Pope John Paul II and President Ronald Reagan who, though no longer president in 1989, had laid the groundwork with the Holy Father, with Mikhael Gorbachev and the "Catholic connection" within Reagan's cabinet which included Dr. Alan Keyes, the only hope for continuing that connection and for righting America's slide into the abyss of immorality and perdition. For the commentary, The "key" to continuing the "Catholic connection" in fighting the "evil empire!" , click on CATHOLIC PewPOINT
The Power of the Rosary through the Message of Medjugorje
In her column this week, Sister Mary Lucy Astuto continues to relate a story from a friend who experienced conversion through God's providence and His Blessed Mother's secret weapon - the Rosary. It all began in Medjugorje after her dear friend Kathy, like so many other millions, had read about the "Miracle of Medjugorje" from Wayne Weible and heard the call of Our Lady to come to her special Oasis of Peace in then Yugoslavia back in 1988. Sister writes from Kathy's point of view in sharing how Kathy's heart was moved to pray with the heart for that is truly the crux in getting to the heart of the matter as Sister Lucy shows in the second of a multiple series. Weekend Events in Church History
Friday represents the 43rd anniversary of the release of the encyclical Datis nuperrime by Pope Pius XII which dealt with the Soviets' invasion of Hungary and the tanks in Budapest. It is another example that refutes those who criticize Pius for being a weakling and not speaking out against tyranny. Appreciation of rebuilding bridges with those who turned their backs on the Church
This weekend we begin a short series on the Church's vigilance in the face of Protestantism with an eye on both the Reformation and Reconciliation, something that has begun with the historic concordat signed last Sunday in Augsburg, Germany on the 482nd anniversary of where the Reformation began. For the forty-sixth installment, click on APPRECIATING THE PRECIOUS GIFT OF OUR FAITH
A different kind of spin!
They say a picture is worth 1000 words, but the words of Bishop Fulton J. Sheen have been known to launch a thousand images in one's mind, one of the ways this late luminary did so much to evangelize the faith. Because of the urgency of the times and because few there are today who possess the wisdom, simplicity and insight than the late Archbishop who touched millions, we are bringing you daily gems from his writings. The good bishop makes it so simple that we have dubbed this daily series: "SIMPLY SHEEN".
"Human nature is something like a child's top painted in the variegated colors of the rainbow. When the top is at rest, each single color and tint can be distinguished, red on one side, blue on another, white on the top, green on the bottom. When the top is set in motion and made to spin, darkness is suffesed with brightness, brightness is mixed with darkness, the colors melt into a confused gray until at last one knows not what hues it be."

Current fare of films are disheartening, but take heart "Life is Beautiful" will be released this Tuesday!
Top Ten Films for the final week of October
Blame it on Halloween but this past week's top ten was a sorry lot with "House on Haunted Hill" outgrossing the rest of the sorry fare offered in the final week of October. That's the bad news. The good is that one of the finest movies in years will be available on video tape this Tuesday when finally the long-awaited "Life is Beautiful", Roberto Benigni's Oscar-winning film - which the Pope loved - will be released. We highly recommend it as one of the best movies you'll see in a long time! As for the Top Ten reviews for the final week of October prepared by the NCCB, click on MOVIES AND MORALS

The DAILY WORD Taken from the Gospel for the Mass on the Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time:
"Finally there came also the other virgins, who said, 'Sir, sir, open the door for us!' But He answered and said, 'Amen I say to you, I do not know you.' Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour." Matthew 25: 11-13
