Countdown to the Millennium

Events this weekend in Church History
Pope Paul III     On May 22, 1545 Pope Paul III, the 220th successor of Peter, in order to regroup Holy Mother Church and stop the onslaught of the Protestant rebellion, called for an Ecumenical Conference that would address reforms. It would be the Nineteenth Council and better be remembered as the Council of Trent which would open on December 13, 1545 in the wintry mountains of Northern Italy and last on and off until 1563 when it would be closed by Pope Pius IV on December 4th and carried out to its fullest by his successor Pope Saint Pius V. YEARS AS AN OBLATE PRIEST
In this weekend's editorial we pay tribute to a very special priest - our spiritual director who will celebrate his 50th Anniversary - his Golden Jubilee on June 4th this year but will commemorate it with a special Thanksgiving Mass on Pentecost Sunday at Christ the King Retreat Center in Buffalo, Minnesota where he is on the Retreat team there. Oblate Cross It is appropriate that that Fr. Al celebrate on the Day the Holy Spirit descended for this gentle, loving priest has touched so many himself with the wisdom and vitality imparted by the Sanctifier. The Holy Trinity puts the exclamation mark on Mary's life as they receive her into the Heavenly Realm
Meditative Lessons on the Glorious Mysteries MY LORD AND MY GOD!
In the third and final part of Chapter 16, The Blessed Mother prepares to be reunited with her Son her soul is taken to Heaven before her body is assumed into Heaven. While her body remains at Loretto the Apostles hold vigil over her, not realizing that Mary is no longer there but has gone to be reunited with her Divine Son. But her work is not done and, combining with her Heavenly Spouse the Holy Spirit They have remained with us and with the Church Jesus founded as He promised. By adhering to all what He asks we will see the Second Pentecost to be made possible by the Triumph of her Immaculate Heart promised 82 years ago today at Fatima and repeated over and over since. These meditative lessons, imparted by Our Lady to the Hidden Flower of the Immaculate Heart after Pentecost 1993, are meant to inspire and prompt a greater understanding of the Glorious Mysteries. For the final part of Chapter 16 and these Meditative Lessons for this year, click on "MY LORD AND MY GOD!"

Love is a many splintered thing
Famous quotes of Bishop Fulton J. Sheen    They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but the words of Bishop Fulton J. Sheen have been known to launch a thousand images in one's mind, one of the ways this late luminary did so much to evangelize the faith. Because of the urgency of the times and because few there are today who possess the wisdom, simplicity and insight than the late Archbishop who touched millions, we are bringing you daily gems from his writings. The good bishop makes it so simple that we have dubbed this daily series: "SIMPLY SHEEN".

"There are two kinds of love: love for its own pleasure, or love for the sake of another; the first is carnal love, the second is spiritual. Carnal love knows the other person only in a biological moment. Spiritual love knows the other person at all moments. In erotic love, the burdens of the other are regarded as impairing one's own happiness; in spiritual love, the burdens of others are opportunities for service."

Cardinal George Basil Hume, O.S.B. - photo from Inside the VaticanBritain's leading prelate Cardinal George Basil Hume, OSB is fighting advanced Cancer after nearly fifty years as a priest and devoted servant of God
We continue with this new series that debuted the beginning of the year, bringing you on a regular basis three times a week the Princes of the Church. Our fifty-sixth red-hat we feature, in alphabetical order is Cardinal George Basil Hume, OSB, the Archbishop of Westminster who was elevated to the cardinalate by Pope Paul VI in the Consistory of May 24, 1976. "If you are filled with sin, no matter their nature, come to Me in the Sacrament of Penance."
Sacred and Merciful Heart of Jesus Immaculate and Sorrowful Heart of Mary
Those words above come from Our Lord on the Feast of Saint Mary Magdalene on July 22, 1994 to the Hidden Flower of the Immaculate Heart in which Jesus asks His children to have the courage and convictions of the Magdalen. His Blessed Mother follows this up two days later with Message #522 in a short message entreating all her little ones to seek refuge in her Divine Son's Sacred Heart. Happy Birthday, Holy Mother Church
Pat Ludwa's View from the Pew     In his column this weekend, Pat Ludwa Today Pat reminds us of our roots and why Jesus established His Church on earth and left us His Spirit. Belarus trying to blot out foreign missionaries with new rules that could cripple Church's efforts in former Soviet Union

With the first Russian priests being ordained since the revolution early in this century, the government of Belarus sees no reason for allowing any foreign Catholic missionaries into the country. This would be fine if the same number of priests had been ordained as foreign missionaries, mostly Polish priests. But the truth is it's the former Soviet Union Republic's way of strongarming and squeezing out both foreign priests and the Church in general. For more, click on Belarus bullies

Not much difference between ACCU and ACLU: They're both liberal to the core and don't want to heed authority!
You could see it coming. The Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities are balking at the Holy Father's directive to uphold the truths of the faith in their curriculum and are prepared to fight the bishops who are endeavoring to carry out the Pope's directive from Ex Corde Ecclesia. It's all part of the growing schism within the American Church and the action will get hotter and more pronounced as the days wind down toward showdown on the Catholic campuses. Pope rekindles need for NATO to lay aside the arms and clasp arms in reconciliation
The Holy Father took the occasion of his Wednesday Papal Audience to peak the conscience of 120 members of the NATO Defense College comparing them to the 2,500 surviving World War II Polish soldiers who were in attendance to celebrate the 55th anniversary of the capture of the Benedictine Monastery Monte Cassino from the Nazis. While the latter touched the Pope's heart and memories, the former he challenged to strive for peace at all costs. For more, click on Papal Audience.

House Armed Services thwarts abortion end-run by pro-abort rep who ousted most outspoken pro-life candidate last year
In a stunning defeat against Loretta Sanchez who won a controversial nailbiting congressional race against incumbent and strong pro-life candidate Bob Dornan in Southern California last year, the House Armed Services Committee shot down her proposal to allow military women and dependents overseas to have abortions and be paid by medical plans which, for the military, are paid by the American taxpayers.
