"CITIZEN'S MISSION": REACHING OUT TO PEOPLE IN EVERYDAY LIFE

Vatican City, 19 (NE) Next Saturday May 22, Vigil of Pentecost, Pope John Paul II will preside a Mass for the conclusion of the Great Citizens' Mission of Rome. The event will gather Roman faithful "in close communion of faith and prayer" with their pastor to "thank the Father for the gift of the Holy Spirit for a renewed missionary presence in the city."

In view of the Third Millennium of Faith and in preparation for the Jubilee of the Year 2000, the "Citizen's Mission" in Rome has reached citizens of the Eternal City in a renewed announcement of the Gospel among people.

The initiative has been supported several times by the Holy Father along the years in which it has been held, and it has reached many places of citizen's daily life, fostering activities illuminated by faith in different areas, such as culture, work, Mass Media and even sports.

Along 1997 and 1998, the mission has had as its goal to proclaim the Gospel among families. Aiming to bring a greater number of people toward the faith, in 1999 the "Citizen's Mission" was directed also to a stable and visible presence in the working places of people.
