SCHEDULE SET FOR POPE'S TRIP TO ARMENIA

VATICAN (CWNews.com) -- The Vatican has unveiled plans for a three-day trip by Pope John Paul to Armenia, from July 2 through 4.

Arriving in the capital city, Yerevan, on July 2, the Holy Father will travel to the cathedral of the Armenian Apostolic Church in nearby Etchmiadzin. He will spend the night in the apostolic palace of Karekin I, the Catholicos of the Armenian Apostolic Church.

On the following day the Pope will travel by car to an Armenian monastery, then return to the capital for a meeting with President Robert Kacharian. He will also pay tribute to the Armenian victims of the 1915 genocide, and meet with all the bishops of the Armenian Apostolic Church, before an ecumenical service in the cathedral that evening.

On July 4, the Pope will preside at the divine liturgy, conducted in the Armenian rite, for Catholics in Ashotsk, in the north of the country, in the morning. Then he will meet with the Armenian Catholic Archbishop Nerses Der Nersessian, and conduct another ecumenical prayer service to commemorate the victims of 1988 earthquake, before returning to the capital for his departure..
