Time for our annual summer hiatus to retool and refresh!

In this weekend's editorial, we coincide vacation time for the staff of the DAILY CATHOLIC with the Holy Father's well-deserved time off. While the publication is on hiatus for a week, it will not be all fun and games for it will be a "working vacation" for the editor as he updates all of the archives to make it easier to review past articles of each category for all features and columns as well as revamping and streamlining the publication to make it easier to peruse the publication while increasing the news content daily. In addition, the time off will afford an opportunity to also streamline and add all those who have requested links in our Ports o' Call links section. The Vicar of Christ Speaks! His Message to the Americas: Overcome the cancer of corruption in your society

Following up a year after the Bishops of North, Central and South America, along with the Caribbean contingent, met for the month-long Synod of the Americas in Rome at the end of 1997, Pope John Paul II officially closed the Synod with his Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation Ecclesia in America at Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine in Mexico City in January 1999. Because of its significance for all Americans, we bring you this important document in several installments over the next few months. For those wanting to read the entire encyclical or check footnotes, go to Ecclesia in America For the twentieth installment on Chapter Five: The Path to Solidarity - The Fight against Corruption , click on THE VICAR OF CHRIST SPEAKS.

PRAYERS & DEVOTION

In honor of the Feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, we present a Novena Prayer that carries an indulgence of 300 days. S. Pen., decreed on October 16, 1936:

O Blessed Lady of Mount Carmel, grant that we may share in all the prayers and penances of your holy cloistered daughters of the Carmelite Order. Bless their labors and pray that they may be a source of spiritual strength to all of us who struggle in the world outside their peaceful walls. O Mary, who entered the world free from stain, obtain for us from God that we may pass out of it free from sin.

June 25th Medjugorje Monthly Message

Dear children! Today I thank you for living and witnessing my messages with your life. Little children, be strong and pray so that prayer may give you strength and joy. Only in this way will each of you be mine and I will lead you on the way of salvation. Little children, pray and with your life witness my presence here. May each day be a joyful witness for you of God's love. Thank you for having responded to my call.

The DAILY WORD

Taken from the Gospel for the Mass on the Feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel on Friday, July 16th

"But I tell you that one greater than the temple is here. But if you knew what this means, 'I desire mercy, and not sacrifice, you would never have condemned the innocent; for the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath."

Matthew 12: 6-8
