Celebrating 50 years of the Holy See helping Palestinian refugees, the Prefect for the Congregation of Oriental Churches Cardinal Achille Silvestrini returned from Beirut optimistic that a solution can be attained over the mosque crisis in Nazareth because of signs of Moslem cooperation. Meanwhile at UN headquarters, Secretary General Kofi Annan sent out an appeal to both Yasser Arafat and Ehud Barak to tread carefully over the mosque issue and not do anything to harm the peace process they have both been working toward in Palestine and Israel respectively. Holy Father leaves grounds of Vatican to spend day at Roman parish as everyday local shepherd, thrilling parishioners
While affairs of state waited, the Holy Father ventured into the northern sector of Rome as the pastoral Bishop of Rome to spend the day at St. Innocent's parish and felt young again, revitalized by the school children who sung a beautiful ballad in Polish for the Pontiff. He was deeply touched, praying for them and counseling them to remain as pure as possible for Jesus in these times when values are challenged. He reminded them that the Jubilee is coming and many pilgrims will be in their back yard, asking them all to welcome them with open arms as Christ would welcome them. John XXIII practically a shoo-in to be beatified next year as Prefect for Congregation for the Causes of Saints explains revised processes during John Paul II's pontificate
Over the past twenty years Pope John Paul II has set all records in canonizing nearly 300 saints and beatifying many more than that as Archbishop Jose Martins explained the process in a special interview with ZENIT. Next year one of those to be beatified will undoubtedly be Pope John XXIII who is expected to be the only papal candidate to receive that honor in 2000, disappointing those who were hoping Pope Pius XII and Pope Paul VI might be included as well. Bishop Carlos Belo raises awareness of East Timor's plight and calls for Justice in the face of broken promises and mass slaughters in September
The head of the Church in East Timor Bishop Carlo Ximenes Belo called for justice in the aftermath of the desolation in his land, citing the total destruction and no one has been accountable for bringing to justice those who perpetrated this atrocity. He lashed out at the international community for ignoring his pleas when it could have saved hundreds of thousands of lives and the fact that they didn't act until it was too late still bothers him and his people greatly. But he reassured all that with help or not, the spirit of his people will overcome all adversity, but their morale is down because of the loss of everything. He is trying desperately to instill hope in his flock when there is so little in the immediate future as the world passes on East Timor, looking now for other trouble spots while his country passes into oblivion. "True repose is not a mere intermission between the acts of the working-life. It is an intense activity, but of a different kind. Just as sleeping is not a cessation of life, but living of a different sort from wakefulness, so repose is an activity no less creative than that of our working hours."
Dear children! Also today I call you to prayer. In this time of grace, may the cross be a sign-post of love and unity for you through which true peace comes. That is why, little children, pray especially at this time that little Jesus, the Creator of peace, may be born in your hearts. Only through prayer will you become my apostles of peace in this world without peace. That is why, pray until prayer becomes a joy for you. Thank you for having responded to my call.
