Pope asserts that all must rely on the Magisterium of the Church in discerning philosophies that could help or harm the faithful of Holy Mother Church.

On the feast of one of the first women Doctors of the Church Saint Teresa of Jesus, the Holy Father issued his 13th encyclical on the foundations of faith and reason entitled Fides et Ratio. Today we continue with the eleventh part of this lengthy and important encyclical in installments spread out over several issues. The eleventh installment begins the fifth chapter The Magisterium's interventions in philosophical matters focusing on "The Magisterium's discernment as diakonia of the truth" in which the Holy Father asserts the Church's Magisterium's responsibility of determining which philosophies are in accord with Church teaching or go against the Doctrines of Holy Mother Church. He emphasizes the necessity to rely on this body of discerners and be obedient to their findings as the "diakonia of truth." POPE JOHN PAUL II'S 13TH ENCYCLICAL ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FAITH AND REASON RELEASED OCTOBER 16, 1998

NEXT WEEK: The Church's interest in philosophy

We cannot hope to achieve heartfelt prayer with God unless we put our minds to it!

As we prepare for the final year of the second millennium, we continue to bring you the signature feature of Father Stephen Valenta, OFM Conv. who constantly preaches living in the heart. In today's installment he points out that we cannot love ourselves if we do not love God and to love Him means to know Him as the basic tenets of the Catechism state: "to know Him, to love Him, to serve Him and be happy with Him in this world and the next." Events Today in Church History

On this date 120 years ago Pope Leo XIII published his second encyclical Quod Apostolici muneris. It was the first of many he would publish on the growing menace known as communism. This 256th successor of Peter was a luminary in foreseeing the blood red sickle that would shadow half of Europe and two thirds of Asia in the coming years. Historical Events in Church Annals for December 28:

TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS

DECEMBER 28:
"On the fourth day of Christmas my True Love gave to me, four calling birds."

The four calling birds represent the four Gospels where truly the Word of God through Jesus and His life for all of us to emulate was recorded. Since Catholics were not allowed to keep bibles or preach during those times, they reinforced others through the song to read the Gospels in private and live it.

PROVERB OF THE DAY

"Even by his manners the child betrays whether his conduct is innocent and right."

Proverbs 20: 11
