Historical Events in Church Annals for December 22:
Election of Pope Saint Innocent I, 40th successor of Peter. This Roman-born pontiff's papacy would last sixteen years. During his pontificate Rome would be sacked by the Goths of Alaric. Innocent would also establish the observance of the Roman rite and persuade the Emperor Honorius to abandon gladiatorial contests in the arenas.
