BRAZIL DOCTOR CONVINCES PRE-TEEN NOT TO HAVE ABORTION
RIO DE JANEIRO (CWN) - A retired doctor on Wednesday convinced an 11-year-old girl and her parents not to go ahead with a court-approved abortion one day after a judge ruled that she was eligible for one under the law because she had been raped.

The unidentified girl was allegedly raped by a 38-year-old farm worker in her hometown four months ago, and her parents petitioned the court one month ago to allow the abortion, causing an uproar in the media between opponents and supporters of abortion. A judge ruled on Tuesday that the abortion could proceed, but news reports on Wednesday said the anonymous retired obstetrician visited the girl's parents and changed their minds with the help of their local priest.

The doctor and the parents then traveled to Rio de Janeiro where the girl was in the hospital preparing for the abortion the next day and stopped the abortion from taking place.
