Sunday, the Feast of Pope Saint Gregory the Great, will be a great day as Pope John Paul II beatifies two holy Pontiffs who had a great significance on the Church in the last two centuries

Pope will beatify his predecessors    In our editorial this week, we look back and we look forward. The interwoven thread in all this is our present Vicar of Christ Pope John Paul II and the similarities he shares with all four Blesseds who will be beatified on Sunday, the traditional Feast of another great Roman Pontiff Pope Saint Gregory the Great. We see in John Paul the devotion of Blessed William Chaminade, founder of the Marianist; the wisdom of Blessed Pius IX, the spiritual depth of Blessed Dom Columba Marmion and the genuine concern for all God's children that Blessed John XXIII possessed. These attributes and virtues give us great exhilaration on this first Sunday of September when the Holy Father will beatify these four men. Pius IX and John XXIII will be the first Pontiffs John Paul has elevated. Hopefully they will not be the last for Popes Leo XIII, Pius XII and Paul VI are all standing in the wings waiting for clearance, so to speak, to gain their celebrated wings of beatification in the progression toward recognition of their sanctity by the Church. The similarities between Pius IX, Pope Saint Pius X, John XXIII and John Paul II are fascinating and immediately evident in their facial likenesses. All more evidence of God's providence in providing the right man at the right time for His Holy Church. For our commentary, The Beatification of John Paul the Great! see CATHOLIC PewPOINT

Like the Pope who will beatify them, all were devoted to the Blessed Mother

HIGHLIGHTS FOR THIS WEEK'S DAILY ISSUES
DAILY
WORLDWIDE
NEWS & VIEWS
from a Catholic Viewpoint

In addition to our new weekly format for daily issues, we'll provide the latest news headlines, updated daily from Catholic World News (of which we will continue to provide their ticker) plus articles from ZENIT and Church News so all can keep up-to-date with what is truly happening in the world from a Roman Catholic point of view. Friday's news will serve for Labor Day Weekend.

FRIDAY
Saint Augustine

On FIRST FRIDAY September 1st we bring you Sister Mary Lucy Astuto's column in which she extolls the virtues of Saint Augustine, offering him as an ideal saint to emulate in these days when so many are seeking answers and coming up empty. She points out that few had as many vices as Augustine, but he was able to overcome them by giving himself to his Creator in body, mind and soul.
SATURDAY
Blessed Virgin Mary on Saturday

On FIRST SATURDAY, besides being a Weekday in Ordinary Time, it is also the customary Observance of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Saturday, a tradition that goes back to the days of Charlemagne. The First Saturdays tradition is more recent, dating back to 1917 at Fatima where Our Lady requested of the visionaries at Fatima that all her children honor her Immaculate Heart and offer reparation for sins through First Saturday devotions.
SUNDAY
Blessed Pope Pius IXBlessed John XXIII

On September 3 His Holiness Pope John Paul II will beatify two Popes who effected history in the past two centuries - Blessed Pope Pius IX and Blessed John XXIII. We bring you the Holy Father's Wednesday General Audience in preparation for this special ceremony at St. Peter's Square today on the Feast of Pope Saint Gregory the Great.
MONDAY

On LABOR DAY, September 4th, columnist Pat Ludwa warns us that Ted Turner's motives are not pure and innocent. Rather the man known as the "mouth of the south" is trying to lead many south to hell as he subscribes to the New Age mantra of ridding the world of organized religion and trying to convince the populace that Christ and His teachings are all a myth. Unfortunately it is no myth that this is happening and we need to realize it and pray.
TUESDAY
Let the Holy Spirit guide
Kiss of Peace is more than a handshake

On September 5th we bring you the eighth installment of Cyndi Cain's inspirational SYMPHONY OF SUFFERING as she enlightens all on the true meaning of the Kiss of Peace during the Mass and asks if we really see Christ in each person when we mouth the words "Peace of Christ be with you." Do we really know what that means? She shares what she received.
WEDNESDAY

On September 6th in his Pro-Life Prescriptions column Dr. Frank Joseph takes on the hypocrisy and lies of Democratic candidate Al Gore, showing how satan has taken over the party that once championed the rights and values of Catholics. Today it is a mere shell of itself, a hull overcome with the barnacles of greed, lust and selfishness that is sinking into the fathoms of sin at an alarming rate.
THURSDAY

On September 7th, we continue our GIFT OF OUR FAITH series on the First Commandment as we treat the Veneration of the Saints which God encourages us to do by honoring and calling upon the Church Triumphant to intercede for us. He asks us to emulate their virtues. No one, including the Blessed Mother is worshipped; only God!
