Events that happened today in Church History

Pope Julius IISistine Chapel   On this date 490 years ago in 1510, Pope Julius II, the 216th successor of Peter, who is remembered for completing the present Basilica of St. Peter's in Rome, made a landmark decision in that mission by commissioning a young sculptor to fashion fifteen statues for the Il Duomo in Siena. His masterful work would earn him an exclusive assignment to paint the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican by Julius. That young artist was, of course, none other than Buonarroti Michelangelo, quite possibly the greatest artist who ever lived.
