Saint PeterSaint Paul

Thursday is the Feast of the two great Apostles and Martyrs Saints Peter and Paul. This very important Feast in the universal Church this year serves as the portal for Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on Friday and the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary on First Saturday, a most appropriate date in this Jubilee Year 2000 as we shall explain in our commentary Friday.

Today we present the full commentary by the Prefect for the Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger. In our CATHOLIC PewPOINT today, we question whether the breakthrough announcement on the completion of the human genone map is something to revel in or rue. We show where "a little knowledge can be dangerous" in raising the alert that we could be headed for a type of "Gattica" existence if we do not keep in mind only God has the right to create, take and alter life.

Pope John XXIIIPope Pius XII

Thursday, the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul is one of the more popular days for papal encyclicals. Six were issued on this day from Pope Benedict XIV in 1748 to Pope John XXIII's first one in 1959. This includes the Pope Pius XII's next to last a year earlier, titled Ad Apostolorum Principis, aimed at China and the bishops to adhere to Rome. Forty-two years later the Church is still putting pressure on China and the Chinese Patriotic Association.

The Holy Father emphasizes importance of the Feast of Corpus Christi and the fruits of the Holy Eucharist in his Angelus Address at the close of the 47th International Eucharistic Congress
His Holiness reads his Wednesday Message    In his Angelus Address on the day he closed the 47th International Eucharistic Congress, Pope John Paul II shared with all in St. Peter's Square the dire necessity for the Feast of Corpus Christi for "Christ has willed to stay with us in the mystery of the Eucharist, becoming the food and drink of our salvation." He illustrated the importance of the Eucharistic Conference and the increase of those universally who have grown deeper in love with Jesus present in the Blessed Sacrament. He also called on the Tabernacle of Christ - the Blessed Mother of God to bring us closer to her Divine Son present in the bread and wine at the Transubstantiation. Finally, he asked Our Lady to guide and protect the Church until the next Eucharist Congress, which will be held in 2004 in Guadalajara, Mexico.
