Events that happened today in Church History

Pope Saint Clementine IPope Nicholas II    Thursday we observe the death of two Popes 629 years apart. One was Pope Saint Clementine I, the 43rd successor of Peter. Clementine called the Third Ecumenical Council which condemned the followers of Nestorius while excommunicating the Patriarch of Constantinople and condemning the Nestorian heresy. To spread the Faith westward, St. Clementine appointed the willing Bishop Saint Patrick to go to Ireland. As we know, the rest is history on the emerald isle. Clementine's pontificate lasted ten years. In 1061 Pope Nicholas II passed on to his Heavenly reward after a two and a half year papacy in which the 155th in the line of Peter forbade the investiture of bishops without papal approval and also, at a special Synod of Bishops, declared that only cardinals would henceforth be eligible for election to Pope.
