POPE EXPRESSES PROFOUND EMOTION AGAIN FOLLOWING WORLD YOUTH DAY
Preparing for University Professors' Jubilee from September 3-10

VATICAN CITY, AUGUST 27 (ZENIT.org)

The historic World Youth Day with its more than two million participants continues to grip John Paul II, who at noon today referred to the impact the Youth Day had on the public.

However, the Holy Father continues with his plans for the future. During his noon meeting with faithful today, in the patio of his summer residence in Castel Gandolfo, he referred to preparations being made for the September 3-10 Jubilee of University Professors, which, for the first time in history, will begin in Jerusalem and end in Rome.

New Energies for the Third Millennium

"The echo of World Youth Day has not died down among the public," the Pope said before praying the Angelus with pilgrims, as he does every Sunday. "The hearts of youths, who were greatly liked, beat for several days in Rome: happy, peaceful youths, quick to greet and smile, respectful of the city and nature, in love with Jesus Christ and his message. They are people who enter the third millennium with new energy," he said

Some of these young people are still in Rome. In fact, there was a group of young men and women in Castel Gandolfo, who had taken part in the great meetings in Tor Vergata on August 19 and 20. They were Gen youths, who are part of the Focolare Movement, founded by Chiara Lubich. "We thank the Lord for the good that the Youth's Jubilee has sown in the Church and the world. Their sheer numbers have made a great impression on all. However, World Youth Day is only a stage in the road that must be followed. The youths who have returned to their countries are called to go deeper into their choice of the Gospel and coherence with their lives."

University Jubilee

The Pope's mind quickly focused on next Sunday, when the Jubilee of University Professors will begin, an event that will end on September 10. The theme is "The University for a New Humanism" (Cf. ZENIT, ZE00082303).

"On the threshold of the third millennium, the Church proposes again to the world of culture and, in particular, to that of the university, the message of Christ as the source of a view of man and the world in which God's plan is fully reflected. It is possible to form new generations in his light, preparing them to face the great challenges of history, to construct societies of solidarity and attention to persons, especially the weakest," John Paul II emphasized.

"Because of this, it is necessary to foment an intense and attentive dialogue between faith and culture, so that these will be regenerated through the encounter with the old and always current Good News."

The Pope concluded his noon meeting by entrusting the fruits of World Youth Day, and the celebration of the forthcoming Jubilee of Universities, to Mary, Mother of the Church, "Virgin of a total and generous 'yes' to the Lord's call." ZE00082707
