Missa "Spíritus Dómini"

Red Vestments

The station is now at St. Lawrence, although the Mass would indicate that at one time it was at the Church of the Twelve Apostles. The Lesson from the Acts describes the joy which filled the people of Samaria when the deacon Philip preached the Gospel and worked miracles among them. This joy is a gift of the Holy Ghost. If the world nowadays is more than ever before restless and eager for amusements, it shows that it has none of the joy and consolation of the divine Paraclete, for which it has become unworthy by its resistance to His grace.

      EPISTLE: Acts 8: 5-8
Léctio Áctuum Apostolórum. In diébus illis: Philíppus descéndens in civitátem Samaríæ prædicábat iliis Christum. Intendébant autem turbæ his quæ a Philíppo dicebántur, unanímiter audiéntes, et vidéntes signa quæ faciébat. Multi enim eórum, qui habébant spíritus immúndos, clamántes voce magna exíbant. Multi autem paralýtici, et claudi curati sunt. Factum est ergo gáudium magnum in illa civitáte. Deo Gratias.
Lesson from the Acts of the Apostles. In those days, Philip going down to the city of Samaria, preached Christ to them. And the people with one accord were attentive to those things which were said by Philip; hearing, and seeing the miracles which he did. For many of them who had unclean spirits, crying with a loud voice went out, And many taken with the palsy, and that were lame, were healed; and there was therefore great joy in that city. Thanks be to God.

      ALLELUIA:
Allelúja, allelúja. V. (Psalm 103: 30) Emitte Spíritum tuum, et creabúntur, et renovábis fáciem terræ, Allelúja.
      Here all kneel
      V. Veni, sancte Spíritus, Reple tuórum corda fidélium: et tui amóris in eis ignem accénde.
Alleluia, alleluia. V. (Psalm 103: 40) Send forth Thy Spirit, and they shall be created; and Thou shalt renew the face of the earth. Alleluia
      Here all kneel
      V. Come, O Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Thy faithful: and kindle in them the fire of Thy love.

      SEQUENCE:    VENI SANCTE SPIRITUS
      Veni, sancte Spíritus,
      Et emítte cælitus
      Lucis tuæ rádium.
      Veni pater páuperum,
      Veni dator múnerum,
      Veni lumen córdium.
      Consolátor óptime,
      Dulcis hospes ánimæ,
      Dulce refrigérum.
      In labóre réquies,
      In æstu tempéries,
      In fletu solátium.
      O Lux beatíssima,
      Reple cordis íntima
      Tuórum fidélium.
      Sine tuo númine,
      Nihil est in hómine,
      Nihil est innoxium.
      Lava quod est sórdidium,
      Riga quod est áridum,
      Sana quod est sáucium.
      Flecte quod est rígidium,
      Fove quod est frígidium,
      Rege quod est dévium.
      Da tuis fidélibus,
      In te confidéntibus,
      Sacrum septenárium.
      Da virtutútis méritum,
      Da salútis éxitum,
      Da perénne gáudium.
      Amen. Allelúja.
      Come Thou Holy Spirit, come,
      And from Thy celestial home
Shed a ray of light divine.
Come, Thou Father of the poor,
Come, Thou source of all our store,
      Come, within our bosoms shrine,
      Thou of Comforters the best,
      Thou the soul's delightful guest,
      Sweet refreshment here below.
In our labor rest most sweet,
      Pleasant coolness in the heat,
Solace in the midst of woe.
      O most blessed Light divine,
Shine within these hearts of Thine,
      And our inmost being fill.
Where Thou art not, man hath nought,
Nothing good in deed or thought,
Nothing free from taint of ill.
Heal our wounds, our strength renew,
On our dryness pour Thy dew,
Wash the stains of guilt away.
Bend the stubborn heart and will,
Melt the frozen, warm the chill,
Guide the steps that go astray.
      On Thy faithful who adore,
      And confess Thee evermore,
      In Thy sevenfold gifts descend.
      Give them virtue's sure reward,
      Give them Thy salvation, Lord,
Give them joys that never end.
      Amen. Alleluia.

      GOSPEL:   Luke 9: 1-6
      Dominus vobiscum.
      R. Et cum spiritu tuo.
      Sequentia sancti Evangelii secundum Lucam
      R.Gloria tibi, Domine

      Laus tibi Christe.

      The Lord be with you.
      R. And with thy spirit.
The continuation of the holy Gospel according to Luke.
      R. Glory to Thee, O Lord

At that time, Jesus calling together the twelve apostles gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases. And He sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick. And He said to them, "Take nothing for your journey; neither staff, nor scrip, nor bread, nor money: neither have two coats: and whatsoever house you shall enter into, abide there, and depart not from thence. And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off even the dust of your feet for a testimony against them. And going out, they went about through the towns preaching the gospel, and healing everywhere."
      Praise be to Christ
