Jesus Christ, Word of Truth

The Sacred Scriptures have foretold these very times and next weekend is absolute proof of the scoffers and blasphemers having their day, short and fleeting as it will be compared to the everlasting damnation they have merited by disowning the Son of God. The tag-line of the The Da Vinci Code film, whose screenplay is by a Jew, is "Seek the Truth." Another manifestation how satan mocks Christ for He is the only Truth!

"Where now are His friends? So many have fallen away and have become indifferent, going about their lives little caring that the Son of Man is slandered and blasphemed. Will they enjoy this blasphemous production, The Da Vinci Code, on Saturday, and then stand in line for Holy Communion on Sunday? Will they betray Him and crucify Him once again? Oh, the incredible hardness of heart of those who lack faith and the fear of God! "

Editor's Note: In Father Louis Campbell's sermon for the Fourth Sunday after Easter, he reminds all that no one should be surprised that the lies, calumny, apostasy and blasphemy have intensified for the devil will do all in his power to twist the truth - especially the "Word of Truth" which is God Himself. Father documents various passages of Holy Writ that confirm how so many will reject the Word and, in doing so, reject God Himself. That is what those whose curiosity towards such blasphemous trash as The Da Vinci Code are basically doing, scorning God to feed their own prying passions. No man can serve two masters and those who think going to such a movie or reading such a book will not affect them had better have the soothing salve of scripture and a strong, unyielding faith because satan is so devious, so clever. Without complying fully to God's Will, one is totally helpless in the prince of the world's clutches. Only by standing fast to Christ and His true Church in all things, without compromise, can one hope to be worthy to stand in His presence in Heaven. The infrangible tenets of Catholicism have not changed. What was a sin in 33 A.D. is still a sin in 2006. Beware of mixing fashion and fads with faith. They won't wash. Faith only will survive and that is what is under such aggressive attack not only in Brown's insidious novel, but in the promotions of the film so cleverly couched and so obviously anti-Catholic. Father notifies all: don't say you weren't warned! Father explains in his sermon [bold and italics below are editor's emphasis.]

This week will see the release of the movie, The Da Vinci Code, billed as "the most anticipated thriller of our time," which will be a vehicle of lies, calumnies and blasphemies against God's Divine Son, Jesus Christ. These lies and blasphemies are crueler to the Heart of Christ than the crown of thorns, more violent than the scourging, more painful than the nails in His hands and feet. The movie bears the mark of the devil, the father of lies, in whom there is no truth (cf. John 8:44). Who will help us to tell the world the truth about the Christ Whom we love, Who is Himself the "word of truth" spoken of in today's Epistle (James 1:17-21)? May the Holy Ghost, Whom Jesus promised to send us from the Father, grant power to our words!

Why should we care? Because He became one of us, taking our nature as man. His favorite title was "Son of Man". What a blessed and joyful day it was when He was born into our world, the Word of God made flesh in the womb of Mary, the Holy Virgin of Nazareth. Even the angels sang, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men of good will" (Luke 2:14)! It was a day of joy because our sinful race was condemned to an eternity without God, and now, through God's mercy, His Son had come to save us. Did the nations send up a shout of joyful praise and thanksgiving to God? Even His Own did not receive Him, allowing Him only a dark and cold stable in Bethlehem for His birthplace. Those "of good will" are few.

Already our Brother, this Divine Child was to become our Bread of Life: "Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man, and drink His blood, you shall not have life in you. He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has life everlasting and I will raise him up on the last day. For My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed. He who eats My flesh, and drinks My blood, abides in Me and I in him. As the living Father has sent Me, and as I live because of the Father, so he who eats Me, he also shall live because of Me. This is the bread that has come down from Heaven; not as your fathers ate the manna, and died. He who eats this bread shall live forever" (John 6:54-60).

Our Divine Lord and Teacher of truth spent three years forming His Apostles, and commanded them, "Go into the whole world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized shall be saved, but he who does not believe shall be condemned" (Mark 16:15,16). To reject His word is to reject Him.

As the time came for Him to leave this unbelieving world and return to the Father, the disciples, still few in number, were saddened. We sense their sadness as we hear Our Lord's words from today's Gospel:

"But I speak the truth to you; it is expedient for you that I depart. For if I do not go, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. And when He has come He will convict the world of sin, and of justice, and of judgment: of sin, because they do not believe in Me; of justice, because I go to the Father, and you will see Me no more; and of judgment, because the prince of this world has already been judged" (John 16:7-11).

Where now are His friends? So many have fallen away and have become indifferent, going about their lives little caring that the Son of Man is slandered and blasphemed. Will they enjoy this blasphemous production, The Da Vinci Code, on Saturday, and then stand in line for Holy Communion on Sunday? Will they betray Him and crucify Him once again? Oh, the incredible hardness of heart of those who lack faith and the fear of God!

We hold to the truth that He was the true Lamb of God, bruised for our sins, deprived of His life for our salvation, laid in the tomb by the sorrowing disciples and His Holy Mother. We hold to the truth that He arose gloriously on the third day, and ascended again to the Father.

Woe to those who do not believe His words! Woe to those who reject His Holy Spirit! Woe to those who believe the lies and calumnies! Woe to those who find entertaining the blasphemous works of the enemies of God! If they do not repent they will end up like those spoken of by St. Jude in his Epistle:

"These men deride whatever they do not know; and the things they know by instinct like the dumb beasts, become for them a source of destruction. Woe to them! For they have gone in the way of Cain, and have rushed on thoughtlessly into the error of Balaam for the sake of gain, and have perished in the rebellion of Core. These men are stains on their feasts, banqueting together without fear, looking after themselves; clouds without water, carried about by the winds; trees in the fall, unfruitful, twice dead, uprooted; wild waves of the sea, foaming up their shame; wandering stars, for whom the storm of darkness has been reserved forever" (Jude 10-13).

St. Jude has words of encouragement for those who still have faith, and a holy fear of the One Who told us: "I am the First and the Last, and he who lives; I was dead, and behold, I am living forevermore…" (Apocalypse 1:17,18):

"But as for you, beloved, be mindful of the words that have been spoken beforehand by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ, who kept saying to you that at the end of time there will come scoffers, walking impiously according to their lusts. These are they who set themselves apart, sensual men, not having the Spirit. But as for you, beloved, build up yourselves upon your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit. Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto life everlasting…

"Now to him who is able to preserve you without sin and to set you before the presence of His glory, without blemish, in gladness, to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, belong glory and majesty, dominion and authority, before all time, and now, and forever. Amen" (Jude 17-21;24,25).
