Double Feast of Saint Anselm , Bishop, Confessor and Doctor of the Church

WHITE Vestments

Saint Anselm was born at Aoust, in Piedmont of Italian nobility. After a childhood devoted to piety and study, Anselm wanted to enter religious life, but his father prevented it, and Anselm became rather wordly for several years. Upon his mother's death, Anselm argued with his father, fled to France, and became a Benedictine monk at Bec, Normandy. Studied under and succeeded Lanfranc as abbot. Archbishop of Canterbury. Theological writer. Counselor to Pope Gregory VII, Pope Urban II, and William the Conqueror. Anselm opposed slavery and obtained English legislation prohibiting the sale of men. He fought King William Rufus's encroachment on ecclesiastical rights and the independence of the Church, and was exiled. Resolved theological doubts of the Italo-Greek bishops at Council of Bari in 1098. The holy Doctor strongly supported celibacy for all clergy. King Henry I invited him to return to England, but they disputed over investitures, and Anselm was exiled again to return in 1106. One of the great philosophers and theologians of the middle ages, he was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1720 by Pope Clement XI.

Lectio libri Sapientiae. Lesson from the Book of Wisdom. He that feareth God will do good: and he that possesseth justice shall lay hold on her, and she will meet him as an honorable mother. With the bread of life and understanding she shall feed him and give him the water of wholesome wisdom to drink: and she shall be made strong in him, and he shall not be moved: and she shall hold him fast, and he shall not be confounded: and she shall exalt him among his neighbors, and in the midst of the Church she shall open his mouth, and shall fill him with the spirit of wisdom and understanding, and shall clothe him with a robe of glory. The Lord our God shall heap upon him a treasure of joy and gladness, and shall cause him to inherit an everlasting name. Thanks be to God.

    ALLELUIA
Alleluia, alleluia. V. (Ecclus. 14: 9) Amavit eum Dominus, et ornavit eum: stolam gloriae induit eum. Alleluia. V. (Os. 14: 6) Justus germinabit sicut lilium : et florebit in aeternum ante Dominum. Alleluia.
Alleluia, alleluia. V. The Lord loved him and adorned him : He clothed him with a robe of glory. Alleluia. V. The just man shall spring as the lily : and shall flourish for ever before the Lord. Alleluia.

    GOSPEL:   John 21: 19-24
    Dominus vobiscum.
    R. Et cum spiritu tuo.
    Sequentia sancti Evangelii secundum Joannem
    R.Gloria tibi, Domine

    Laus tibi Christe.

    The Lord be with you.
    R. And with thy spirit.
The continuation of the holy Gospel according to John.
    R. Glory to Thee, O Lord

At that time Jesus said to Peter: ' Follow Me.' Peter turning about saw that disciple whom Jesus loved following, who also leaned on His breast at supper and said: 'Lord, who is he that shall betray Thee?' Him therefore when Peter had seen, he saith to Jesus: 'Lord, and what shall this man do?' Jesus saith to him: 'So I will have him to remain till I come, what is it to thee? Follow thou Me.' This saying therefore went abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die. And Jesus did not say to him: He should not die; but: 'So I will have him to remain till I come: what is it to thee?' This is that disciple who giveth testimony of these things, and hath written these things: and we know that the testimony is true.
    Praise be to Christ

Through Whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominations worship it, the Powers stand in awe. The Heavens and the Heavenly hosts together with the blessed Seraphim in triumphant chorus unite to celebrate it. Together with them we entreat Thee, that Thou mayest bid our voices also to be admitted, while we say in lowly praise:
    HOLY, HOLY, HOLY...
