Missa "Tenuisti manum"
John, surnamed Damascene (or of Damascus), was raised up by God to defend the veneration of images, at a time when the Emperor Leo the Isaurian endeavored to destroy it. Filled with divine knowledge (Epistle) he strongly opposed the Iconoclasts (or destroyers of images in Greek) : "his heavenly teaching and his admirable power of mind" (Collect) earned for him the title of Doctor. His biography, written in the tenth century by the Patriarch John of Jerusalem, relates several legends recalled in the liturgy of his Mass.
It says, for instance, that the emperor having accused him of betraying the Caliph of Damascus, whose counselor and minister he was, he was condemned to have his right hand cut off. But as in the case of the man with the dried up hand, mentioned in the Gospel of this Mass, his hand was miraculously restored to him, for he promised the Virgin Mary to use it henceforth in writing her praises. He kept his promise.
His numerous works, rich in knowledge and piety and his eloquence caused him to be compared by the Second Council of Nicea to a "river of gold" and to be proclaimed Doctor be Leo XIII.
St. John Damascene fell asleep in the Lord about 749 (others say: (708). Let us venerate holy images so as to obtain the protection of those they represent.

Lesson from the Book of Wisdom.
She conducted the just, when he fled from his brother's wrath, through the right ways, and shewed him the kingdom of God, and gave him the knowledge of the holy things, made him honorable in his labors, and accomplished his labors.
In the deceit of them that overreached him, she stood by him, and made him honorable.
She kept him safe from his enemies, and she defended him from seducers, and gave him a strong conflict, that he might overcome, and know that wisdom is mightier than all. She forsook not the just when he was sold, but delivered him from sinners: she went down with him into the pit.
And in bands she left him not, till she brought him the sceptre of the kingdom, and power against those that oppressed him: and shewed them to be liars that had accused him, and gave him everlasting glory.
She delivered the just people, and blameless seed, from the nations that oppressed them.
She entered into the soul of the servant of God and stood against dreadful kings in wonders and signs.
And she rendered to the just the wages of their labors, and conducted them in a wonderful way: and she was to them for a covert by day, and for the light of stars by night:
