Double Feast of Saint Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows, Confessor

WHITE Vestments
Missa "Oculus Dei"

Saint Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows was born in 1828 in the town of Assisi where six centuries earlier Saint Francis had left riches to form his order and rebuild Christ's Church. After a youth devoted to the world and society, attending the theatre, chasing women and the hunt, like Francis he turned his back on the world, the flesh and the devil in being led to the Passionist Order by Our Lady and became a veritable Apostle of her Sorrows. His life was throughout perfect and irreproachable, He died at the age of twenty four and many miracles confirmed his holiness. He was canonized by Pope Benedict XV, who held him up as a model to young people.

The Verbumquo for today is "Oculus", the Latin word for "Eye" as in the Introit for today's Mass of Saint Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows Oculus Dei. For editor Michael Cain's reflections on the Daily word from the Propers for today's Holy Mass, see Windows of the Soul

We want to thank the Friends of Our Lady of Fatima for expediting these resources of the Propers. Sources: Saint Andrew Daily Missal and the Marian Missal , 1945.

INTROIT: Ecclesiasticus 11: 13
Oculus Dei respéxit illum in bono, et eréxit eum ab humilitáte ipsíus, et exaltávit caput ejus: et miráti sunt in illo multi, et honoravérunt Deum. (Ps. 72: 1) How good is God to Israel, to those who are right of heart! v. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Repeat The eye of God...

Who livest and reignest, with God the Father, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, World without end.

EPISTLE: 1 John 2: 14-17
Deo Gratias.
Lesson from the Epistle of blessed John the Apostle. Dearly beloved : I write unto you, young men because you are strong, and the word of God remaineth in you, and you have overcome the evil. Love not the world nor the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the charity of the Father is not in him: for all that is in the world is the concupiscence of the flesh and the concupiscence of the eyes and the pride of life: which is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth, and its concupiscence. But he who doeth the will of God abideth for ever. Thanks be to God.

GRADUAL: Psalm 30: 20
Quam magna multitúdo dulcédinis tuæ, Dómine, quam abscondísti timéntibus te! V. Perfecísti eis qui sperant in te, in conspéctu filiórum hóminum.
How great is the multitude of Thy sweetness, O Lord, which Thou hast hidden for them that fear Thee! V. Thou hast perfected them that hope in Thee in the sight of the sons of men.

TRACT:   Psalm 83: 6-7,11,13
Beátus vir, cujus est auxílium abs Te: ascensiónes in corde suo dispósuit, in valle lacrimárum, in loco quem pósuit. V. Elégi abjéctus esse in domo Dei mei: magis quam habitáre in tabernáculis peccatórum. V. Non privábit bonis eos, qui ámbulant in innocéntia: Dómine virtútum, beátus homo, qui sperat in Te.
Blessed is the man whose help is from Thee: in his heart he hath disposed to ascend by steps, in the vale of tears, in the place which he hath set. V. I have chosen to be an abject in the house of my God, rather than to dwell in the tabernacles of sinners. V. He will not deprive of good things them that walk in innocence: O Lord of hosts, blessed is the man that trusteth in Thee.

GOSPEL:   Mark 10: 13-21
Dominus vobiscum.
R. Et cum spiritu tuo.
Sequentia sancti Evangelii secundum Marcum
R.Gloria tibi, Domine

Jesus autem dixit ei: "Quid me dicis bonum? Nemo bonus, nisi unus Deus. Præcépta nosti: Ne adúlteres, Ne occidas, Ne furéris, Ne falsum testimónium dixeris, Ne fraudem féceris, Honóra patrem tuum et matrem." At ille respóndens, ait ills: Magíster, haec ómnia observávi a juventúte mea. Jesus autem intúitus eum, diléxit eum, et dixit ei: "Unum tibi deest: vade, quæcúmque habes vende, et da paupéribus, et habétis thesáurum in cælo: et veni, séquere Me."
Laus tibi Christe.

The Lord be with you.
R. And with thy spirit.
The continuation of the holy Gospel according to Mark. R. Glory to Thee, O Lord

At that time: They offered to Jesus little children, that He should touch them. But the disciples rebuked them that offered them. Whom, when Jesus saw, He was angered and said to them: "Suffer little children to come to Me, and forbid them not, for of such is the Kingdom of God. Amen I say to you, whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, shall not enter into it." And embracing them, and laying His hands upon them. He blessed them. And when He was gone forth into the way, a certain man running up and kneeling before Him, asked Him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may receive life everlasting? And Jesus said to him, "Why callest thou Me good? None is good but one, that is God. Thou knowest the commandments: Do not commit adultery, do not kill, do not steal, bear false witness, do no fraud, honor thy father and mother." But he answering, said to Him: Master, all these things I have observed from my youth. And Jesus looking on him, loved him, and said to him: "One thing is wanting unto thee: go, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in Heaven; and come, follow Me."
Praise be to Christ

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation that we should at all times and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God: through Christ our Lord. Through Whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominations worship it, the Powers stand in awe. The Heavens and the Heavenly hosts together with the blessed Seraphim in triumphant chorus unite to celebrate it. Together with them we entreat Thee, that Thou mayest bid our voices also to be admitted, while we say in lowly praise:
HOLY, HOLY, HOLY...
