WORLDWIDE NEWS & VIEWSwith a Catholic slant
HEADLINES:
Holy Father changes Universal Day of Reconciliation from Ash Wednesday to the First Sunday of Lent in 2000
Possibly because more Catholics will be attending Mass on the First Sunday of Lent, the Holy Father has decided to move the Mea Culpa Day when Catholics the world over will examine their conscience forgiving and seeking forgiveness as a cleansing process for the Jubilee Year 2000. It was originally scheduled a few days earlier on Ash Wednesday. The Pope will inaugurate the Jubilee on Christmas Eve when he opens not one, but four Holy Doors - a first in the history of the Popes. For more, click on New date for Mea Culpa
Solemn Funeral held in East Timor for slain religious, Pope, Bishop of Bacau and Mother Superior lament senseless slaughter of innocents
Sadness permeated Bacau's cathedral on Wednesday as the faithful filed past the coffins of two nuns, three seminarians, a deacon and three lay people who were brutally murdered by retreating militia last weekend while returning from a mercy mission to the refugee camps. Bishop Basilio Do Nascimento called it senseless for these people had no enemies. Sixty nuns from the Order of the two murdered nuns attended a special memorial in Jakarta and in Rome the Holy Father called for an end and for justice at a time when the Vatican has been suggested as a mediator to bring peace to this troubled land. Holy Father to beatify six more on Sunday, bringing total to 944 during his twenty-one year pontificate
This weekend Pope John Paul II will hold his 119th beatification ceremony elevating to blessed status in St. Peter's Square a Belgian priest from early in this century and five Italians - a Capuchin monk, two Franciscans, and two parish priests, one who founded the Servants of Mary. The Square will be a busy place this weekend with fireworks and appearance by the Holy Father on Saturday and the Beatifications on Sunday. For more, click on Beatification Sunday.
Pope's influence carries all the way to the White House, Clinton claims he was moved by the Holy Father's request to forgive debts so he intends to follow through.
Perhaps there is a chance for the prodigal son to return. That hope rose after Bill Clinton announced that he was moved by the Pope's request to wealthy nations to forgive third world country debts as a gift for the millennium. As crazy as that sounds the Holy Father has clout after a few nations have already announced they would do so and to make it even more profound, Clinton announced that he was willing to forgive the debts. The gesture is nice but there's bound to be plenty of opposition from the taxpayers so we will see just how committed Clinton is or if it was just another pr ploy to say what people at a particular meeting or conference wanted to hear. It will be interesting to see. For more, click on Is Clinton sincere in truly forgiving debts?.

Weekend Events in Church History
On Sunday we remember the 102nd anniversary of the birth of Giovanni Montini in Breschia, Italy on September 24, 1897. He would go on to become cardinal and Archbishop of Milan before being elected the 263rd successor of Peter on June 21, 1963 as Pope Paul VI and bring Vatican II to its conclusion in 1965. He died on August 6, 1978 after a fifteen-year papacy that saw, in his own words, "satan enter the sanctuary." Before After
Out with the old, in with the new!
In this weekend's editorial, we all have to do a double-take at the beautiful new face St. Peter's Basilica has put on for the Jubilee. Gone is the dark, dirty, brownish, earthy colors and in its place a bright, white and pastel facade which makes St. Peter's all dressed up for the celebrations just in time. Fireworks and blessings will rain down on St. Peter's Square this weekend and don't we all wish we were there! It's the little things that count!
In her column this week, Sister Mary Lucy Astuto talks about her "little sister" - the great Doctor of the Church Saint Therese of Lisieux whose feast we celebrate with the Church on Friday. Sister shows how hidden she was in life and how visible she has become after her death, touching countless hearts through her little, hidden ways and striving for holiness like few before her or since have tried to do. Sister Lucy reminds us of her intercessory power in Heaven and not to forget this wonderful saint. For her column this weekend, My Little Sister Therese, click on GETTING TO THE HEART OF THE MATTER

The cross can be so obvious we miss it!
They say a picture is worth 1000 words, but the words of Bishop Fulton J. Sheen have been known to launch a thousand images in one's mind, one of the ways this late luminary did so much to evangelize the faith. Because of the urgency of the times and because few there are today who possess the wisdom, simplicity and insight than the late Archbishop who touched millions, we are bringing you daily gems from his writings. The good bishop makes it so simple that we have dubbed this daily series: "SIMPLY SHEEN".
"How many people there are in Church on Sunday sitting in the first seat of the pew, who resent anyone asking them to 'please move over.' They came to kneel before a cross, but they do not want one standing alongside them."
Double Jeopardy doubles up on competition
Top Ten Films for the fourth week of September
Tommy Lee Jones' latest thriller rocketed to the top in the first week of its release to easily outdistance and double up on last week's box office champ "Blue Streak". Those were the only two films this past week in double figures as the remaining eight showed an anemic return including Robin William's latest "Jakob the Liar" which finished a pitiful eighth. To show how weak the field is, "Star Wars" in its 19th week still finished 12th, having already garnered nearly $425 million to date. The DAILY WORD
Taken from the Gospel for the Mass on the Feast of the Guardian Angels:
"Amen I say to you, unless you turn and become like little children, you will not enter into the kingdom of Heaven. Whoever, therefore, humbles himself as this little child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of Heaven." Matthew 18: 3-4

September 25th Medjugorje Monthly Message
Dear children! Today again I call you to become carriers of my peace. In a special way, now when it is being said that God is far away, He has truly never been nearer to you. I call you to renew prayer in your families by reading the Sacred Scripture and to experience joy in meeting with God Who infinitely loves His creatures. Thank you for having responded to my call.
