Double Feast of Saint Bernardine of Siena, Confessor and Religious Founder

WHITE Vestments

Missa "Os justi"

At this season of the year, when Jesus by His triumph has realized His name of Saviour, the Cycle celebrates the Feast of St. Bernardine who was consumed "by the very ardent love of this divine name" (Collect).

Born of a noble family of Siena, St. Bernardine renounced all his possessions. He kept his chastity intact, in spite of the dangers to which his handsome features exposed him. The Church applies to him the words of Holy Scripture: "He had it in his power to violate the commandment of God, and he did not violate it" (Epistle). "Not placing his hope in money and treasures" (Ibid.) he left all, to follow Christ (Gospel), and entered the Order of St. Francis, one of whose glories he is. Travelling through towns and villages, everywhere he preached the name of Jesus (Collect) and thereby wrought many miracles.

St. Peter Celestine appeared to him to warn him of his approaching end which came on Ascension Eve, in 1444.

Let us ask God to grant us, through the intercession and merits of St. Bernardine, a great love for the name of Jesus and thereby to kindle in us the flame of divine charity (Collect).

EPISTLE:   Ecclesiasticus 31: 8-11
Deo Gratias.
Lesson from the Book of Wisdom. Beloved of God and men, whose memory is in benediction. He made him like the saints in glory, and magnified him in the fear of his enemies, and with his words he made prodigies to cease. He glorified him in the sight of kings, and gave him commandments in the sight of his people, and showed him His glory. He sanctified him in his faith and meekness, and chose him out of all flesh. For He heard him and his voice, and brought him into a cloud. And He gave him commandments before His face, and a law of life and instruction.
Thanks be to God.

Dominus vobiscum.
R. Et cum spiritu tuo.
Sequentia sancti Evangelii secundum Matthaeum.
R.Gloria tibi, Domine

Laus tibi Christe.

The Lord be with you.
R. And with thy spirit.
The continuation of the holy Gospel according to Matthew. R. Glory to Thee, O Lord

At that time, the disciples came to Jesus saying: Who, thinkest Thou, is the greater in the kingdom of Heaven? And Jesus calling unto Him a little child, set him in the midst of them and said: "Amen I say to you, unless you be converted and become as little children, you shall not enter into the kingdom of Heaven. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, he is the greater in the kingdom of Heaven. And he that shall receive one such little child in My name receiveth Me."
Praise be to Christ

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation that we should at all times and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God: through Christ our Lord. Through Whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominations worship it, the Powers stand in awe. The Heavens and the Heavenly hosts together with the blessed Seraphim in triumphant chorus unite to celebrate it. Together with them we entreat Thee, that Thou mayest bid our voices also to be admitted, while we say in lowly praise:
HOLY, HOLY, HOLY...
