Saint Catherine Labouré was a French maiden who was the ninth of eleven children born May 2, 1806 to a farm family. From an early age she felt a call to the religious life. She never learned to read or write and was forced to take over running the house at age eight after her mother died and her older sister joined the Sisters of Charity. Later she worked as a waitress in her uncle's cafe in Paris. She received a vision in which Saint Vincent de Paul told her that God wanted her to work with the sick, and she later embraced the religious state in the Second Order of Vincentians (Sisters of Charity) at Paris. Three times In the chapel of their convent, commencing on 18 July, 1830 the Virgin Mary appeared to St. Catherine, who then was a twenty-four year old novice. The first apparition occurred in the chapel of the community's motherhouse. St. Catherine beheld a lady seated on the right side of the sanctuary. When St. Catherine approached her, the heavenly visitor told her how to act in time of trial and pointed to the altar as the source of all consolation. Promising to entrust St. Catherine with a mission which would cause her great suffering, the lady also predicted the anticlerical revolt which occurred at Paris in 1870. On November 27, the lady showed St. Catherine the medal of the Immaculate Conception, now universally known as the "Miraculous Medal." On one side it has the image of Our Lady, and the words, "O Mary, conceived wthout sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee"; on the other side are the hearts of Jesus and Mary. She commissioned St. Catherine to have the medal made, and to spread devotion to this medal. Our Lady told Catherine that wearers of the medal would receive great graces. At that time, only her spiritual director, Father Aladel, knew of the apparitions. Forty-five years later, St. Catherine spoke fully of the apparitions to one of her superiors. St. Catherine died in 1876, and was canonized on July 27, 1947.

Dearly beloved, I charge thee before God and Jesus Christ, Who shall judge the living and the dead, by His coming, and His Kingdom. Preach the word: be instant in season: reprove, entreat, rebuke in all patience, and doctrine. For there shall be a time, when they will not endure sound doctrine; but according to their own desires they will heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears, and will indeed turn away their hearing from the truth, but will be turned unto fables. But be thou vigilant, labor in all things, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill thy ministry. Be sober. For I am even now ready to be sacrificed; and the time of my dissolution is at hand.
