Double Feast of Saint Frances of Rome, Widow

White Vestments

Missa "Cognovi, Domine"

Born in Rome in 1384, Saint Frances of Rome was married off by her parents at the age of 12 to Roman nobleman Lorenzo Ponziano. Though Frances had desperately wanted to become a nun, she succumbed to her parents' will and thus it was God's will that she be with her husband for 40 years during which time they never had an argument. Though the couple went through severe financial hardships, Frances always praised God for His providence.

Frances had a large family and always felt her household duties were as much a prayer as kneeling in church as she often said, "A married woman must leave God at the altar to find Him in her domestic cares." After her husband died, she founded the Oblates and became a nun. She had many visions including often where her guardian angel would shine such a bright light that she was able to read her Divine Office at night via the Heavenly light. She promoted the concept of guardian angels and was also given the day she would die, March 9 and true to God's word, He took her home on that day in 1440 at the age of 56.

All the necessary duties and virtues of women are set forth in this Epistle : The valiant woman loves her husband and merits his trust : she is a good housewife, is prudent and industrious, manages cleverly, handles the spindle, the needle and scissors ; she possesses wisdom, is charitable in her actions and in her words, and fears God : there is also bestowed upon her the justice of her children and of her husband.

EPISTLE:   Proverbs 31: 10-31

Lectio libri Sapientiae. Mulirem fortem quis inveniet?
Deo Gratias.

Lesson from the Book of Wisdom. Who shall find a valiant woman? Far and from the uttermost coasts is the price of her. The heart of her husband trusteth in her, and he shall have no need of spoils. She will render him good, and not evil, all the days of her life. She hath sought wool and flax, and hath wrought by the counsel of her hands. She is like the merchant's ship, she bringeth her bread from afar. And she hath risen in the night, and given a prey to her household, and victuals to her maidens. She hath considered a field, and bought it : with the fruit of her hand she hath planted a vineyard. She hath girded her lions with strength, and hath strengthened her arm. She hath tasted and seen that her traffic is good : her lamp shall not be put out in the night. She hath put out her hand to strong things, and her fingers have taken hold of the spindle. She hath opened her hand to the needy, and stretched out her hands to the poor. She shall not fear for her house in the cold of snow : for all her domestics are clothed with double garments. She hath made for herself clothing of tapestry : fine linen, and purple is her covering. Her husband is honorable in the gates, when he sitteth among the senators of the land. She made fine linen and sold it, and delivered a girdle to the Chananite. Strength and beauty are her clothing, and she shall laugh in the latter day. She hath opened her mouth to wisdom, and the law of clemency is on her tongue. She hath looked well to the paths of her house, and hath not eaten of her bread idle. Her children rose up, and called her blessed : her husband, and he praised her. Many daughters have gathered together riches : thou hast surpassed them all. Favor is deceitful, and beauty if vain : the woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands : and let her works praise her in the gates.
Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL:   Matthew 25: 1-13

Dominus vobiscum.
R. Et cum spiritu tuo.
Sequentia sancti Evangelii secundum Matthaeum.
R.Gloria tibi, Domine

In illo temmpore: Dixit Jesus discipulis suis parabolam hanc: Simile erit regnum caelorum decem virginibus: quaeaccipentes lampades suas exierunt obviam sponso et sponsae. At ille respondens, ait: Amen dico vobis, nescio vos. Vigilate itaque quia nescio vos. Vigilare itaque, quia nescitis diem, neque horam.'
Laus tibi Christe.

The Lord be with you.
R. And with thy spirit.
The continuation of the holy Gospel according to Matthew.
R. Glory to Thee, O Lord

At that time, Jesus spoke to His disciples this parable: 'The kingdom of Heaven shall be like to ten virgins, who taking their lamps went out to meet the bridegroom and the bride. And five of them were foolish, and five wise; but the five foolish having taken their lamps, did not take oil with them: but the wise took oil in their vessels with the lamps. And the bridegroom tarrying, they all slumbered and slept. And at midnight there was a cry made; Behold the bridegroom cometh, go ye forth to meet him. Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said to the wise: Give us of your oil, for our lamps are gone out. The wise answered, saying: Lest perhaps there be not enough for us and for you, go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. Now, whilst they went to buy, the bridegroom came: and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage, and the door was shut. But at last came also the other virgins, saying: Lord, Lord, open to us. But he answering said: Amen I say to you, I know you not. Watch ye therefore, because you know not the day nor the hour.'
Praise be to Christ

The Heavens and the heavenly hosts together with the blessed Seraphim in triumphant chorus unite to celebrate it. Together with these we entreat Thee that Thou mayest bid our voices also to be admitted while we say with lowly praise:
